Welcome Back!

Thanks to all of our Hawkwood School Families for the support that you have shown our teaching staff over the past few weeks. We recognize that the break in routine and learning disruption created stress for all of our families. We hope that in the long term, the messages that were sent to our provincial government create better learning conditions for all students.

National Day for Truth & Reconciliation

National Day for Truth & Reconciliation 2025

Prior to the recent labour action, our grade 4 team did some great work celebrating National Day For Truth & Reconciliation. With the support of Ms. MacDonald, they produced an amazing assembly on Friday Oct. 3rd, which included songs, stories and highlighting the importance of recognizing this special day.

Indigenous Ways of Knowing

Leading up to this important day and assembly, our grade 4 team explored many different types of indigenous ways of sharing, communicating and creating.

Metis Dot Art

Metis Dot Art

The students explored the story of The Giving Tree by Leah Dorion. This exploration included trying out some Metis Dot Art inspired by artist Christi Belcourt. The process encourages patience, attention to detail and is also an opportunity for students to express gratitude for the world around them.

Land Acknowledgement

Land Acknowledgement

Students created their own land acknowledgements to honour the place where they live and learn. Part of this included creating some artwork inspired by Alberta Indigenous artist Jason Carter. This process of connecting land, nature and art, helps students to reflect on respect, gratitude and their role as caretakers of the land.

Zentangle Butterflies

Zentangle Butterflies

Zentagle is an artform created by Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas to help people relax, focus and express creativity through repeated patterns. The orange butterfly represents Indigenous children who were taken to residential schools.

Our grade 4 students also read the Blackfoot story Nitsitapi and the Butterfly that teaches us about resilience, community, connection and healing.

Cultural Night Postponed

Our cultural night, which was scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 6th, is being moved to February. This is an important piece of our school plan this year and will be hosted on an evening later in February with a specific date being shared in January. Thank you for your patience as this event was adversely impacted by the recent labour action.

Support for Our TeachingWelcome Back Cake

During the recent absence of our teaching staff, our 23 team-member support staff were at school every day working, creating, organizing and preparing for the return of our students. Included in this were a couple of special treats that were focused around the return of our teaching staff. We are very grateful for the support shown by our support staff. A beautiful bulletin board and cake on the first day, along with some wonderful samosas from the ICNA (Islamic Circle of North America) Sisters Canada. Taking care of each other is a vital part of our Hawkwood School Community.

Have a great week!
