School Development Plan - Literacy

Throughout the past three years we have maintained a focus on the writing process. While we continue to teach writing, we will be emphasizing reading instruction and assessment in our School Development Plan in the category of literacy. The ability to read is something that can also impact a student’s level of success in other subjects.

Reading is a very complex skill that has many different factors that influence a student's success. Find out more about The Reading Rope.

From the beginning of the school year, we have been assessing our students' reading ability in all of our classes. The data we collect informs our next right steps in terms of what and how we teach. During our Oct. 20 professional learning day (no classes for students) we will be looking at ways to support students who are struggling or a bit behind in their reading skills.

The Impact of Gratitude

There is something we all like about being appreciated. When someone else notices something that we have done, accomplished, or contributed, we feel like we are making an impact, helping or contributing in a positive way. An often-overlooked aspect of gratitude is the impact that it can have on the person that is being grateful.

Our lives as parents and teachers are filled with busy times, busy days and lots of different demands placed on us, including many that we place on ourselves. When sometimes things do not go as planned, or how we wanted them to go, we can focus too much time and energy on the negative aspects of our lives.

By intentionally looking for things to be grateful for each day, we can often change our outlook and attitude. By doing this, we shift our focus from things that are negative to ones that we see and understand as positive. Doing this regularly can have a tremendously positive impact on our level of resiliency, how we interact with people, even our productivity.

This weekend, think of something each day that you are grateful for. Hint: this process is more effective when practiced outside.
