School Drop-Off and Pickup Safety
With over 700 students coming and going at the same time each day at Hawkwood School, it is really important to remember a few things that will keep you and your children safe.
Crosswalks - There are three crosswalks that are available for students and families to use each day. The City of Calgary has recently added big markers to two of them . (we are working on a third). We have had many people crossing the street from between cars and even school buses creating very unsafe situations for the students. Please take the extra minute to walk to the cross walk and keep your children safe.
Parking - Our parking lot is small and busy and not available for student drop off at any time. With staff vehicles, special needs buses, accessibility parking and delivery vehicles, it is a very dangerous place to drop off students. If you are dropping off your child in the driveway for Kids Come First, please do so before 8:00 as it gets too busy after that. Remember, this also applies on days when it is raining, it is snowing, you are running late, your child may not feel 100%, you may not feel 100%, when it is really cold, when it’s a full moon, and when it is not a full moon.
Driving - With the volume of traffic during dropoff and pickup times, it is important to drive safely. Going slow, being aware of children, parking only in designated areas are all important. Parking too close to crosswalks (less than 5 metres), doing u-turns on crosswalks and stopping to drop off your child in the middle of the street are all things that increase the level of risk for everyone, particularly the students.
Learning By Creating
There are many different ways our students learn each day. Learning through listening, watching, sharing, struggling, and collaborating are all very valuable. For many of our students the most engaging type of learning is when they get to create something. Something that is their own that represents some part of who they are. Here are a couple of recent examples from our grade 1’s who had some fun meeting some learning outcomes from their Art, Health and Social Studies curriculums.
