How Does Learning to Read Happen?

While our brains are hardwired to learn language and communications through our experiences, learning to read is something that needs to be taught. Like most complex skills, this process happens in steps. Starting with letter names, then letters sounds, then how some letters sound when they are put together, then putting those sounds together in a word. After that, it is figuring out what the words mean, and also what they mean when they are put together in a certain order in a sentence or a story.

For most of us, we do not remember each of these steps along the way, but we are thankful that someone took the time to show us how. Here is a brief summary of how those early reading steps happen.

Hello Hawkwood School families! We are in need of volunteers for our Bi-

Annual Casino fundraiser that will be taking place at the new ACE Casino on December 9th and 10th. We are very lucky to have received a Saturday & Sunday slot! We still need to fill 32 volunteer positions... HELP!!! If we don't have these positions filled we risk losing potentially $65,000 in fundraising for Hawkwood School.
