Principal Blog - Week of Nov. 27th

What Does The Land Teach Us?

We learn lots of different things from lots of different sources. Throughout this school year,  our grade 1 team is learning about things like the Nakoda First Nations “Winter Count” that they used to track time instead of a calendar, as well as the Indigenous Lunar Cycle and indigenous plants.

This work is part of our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation as we integrate aspects of indigenous ways of knowing into our everyday curriculum learning tasks.

We will check in with our grade 1 team again as they add more learning adventures to their bulletin board through the school year.

What Happens When We Make Kindness the Norm?

Our partners at Alberta Health recently shared, via their newsletter, the importance of being kind. Although World Kindness Day (Nov. 13th) has passed, we know that small , positive actions within our school community can have a great impact on any day. The purpose of WKD is to highlight good deeds in the community and focus on the positive power of kindness. Just by helping one person, one small action can change the trajectory or someone's entire day, week, month or year. Here are some simple activities you can do as a classroom or on your own to celebrate World Kindness Day.

  • LEARN - about the science of kindness
  • READ - a book about kindness
  • LISTEN - to a podcast or video about kindness
  • DO - a random act of kindness

While it is vital to make a difference in the lives of others, we cannot pour from an empty cup. Be kind to yourself, take time to rest and invest in your own care as well.

Mixing Social Studies and Art

During a recent study of the Rocky Mountain Region of Alberta, our grade 4 Tran class demonstrated what they had learned in a very unique way. Our students took inspiration from Canada’s Group of Seven painters who painted some great Canadian landscapes in very unique ways. These mixed-media landscapes include background, middle ground and foreground of some of the scenic views that we get to experience in Southern Alberta.

Have a great week!
