Free Online Well-Being Sessions for Families

Student well-being forms one of the most important building blocks for learning. Without it, students tend to struggle. Many parents wonder what is the best way to support their children toward being happy, successful learners.

Truth and Reconciliation in Grade 3

Ms. Colwell’s grade 3 class took the opportunity around National Day for Truth and Reconciliation to examine the different treaties that were signed in different parts of Canada. The project is just part of Indigenous ways of knowing that get integrated into our daily curriculum adventures across all grade levels throughout our school.

Part of the provincial “Teacher Quality Standard”, requires teachers to, among many other things, apply foundational knowledge about First Nations, Metis and Inuit. This work includes, but is not limited to:

  • Enabling students to develop a knowledge and understanding of, and respect for, indigenous peoples cultures and languages.
  • Examining treaties and agreements with First Nations
  • Residential schools and their legacy

Volunteer at Hawkwood School

Most of our grade level teams are busy planning upcoming field trips and special events in their classrooms for the school year. Many of these augmentations to our regular program are made possible through the support of our Hawkwood School council / Friends society and parent volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering for these or any other events, you will need to complete the CBE Annual Volunteer Form. The form can be filled out by accessing your MyCBE Account and finding School Engage,  or completing the form online and emailing it to hawkwood@cbe.ab.ca.

Many of our parents and guardians work during the day so volunteering during school hours is challenging. There are many other great ways of helping and connecting to your child’s school beyond the classroom. Our Hawkwood School Council and Friends Society do a wonderful job of supporting everything that we do each day. They have many opportunities to help out that do not happen during the school / work day. Find out more at the Hawkwood School Council Blog.

Additional information about volunteering can be found on the Hawkwood School Website.

Assemblies and Celebrating Learning

Over the years we have hosted many different types of assemblies at our school. With the support of Ms. MacDonald and Mr. Loyns, grade level teams have created wonderful assemblies around different events and times in our school calendar.

This year we are taking a slightly different approach as each grade level will host a Celebration of Learning. These celebrations, also supported by Ms. MacDonald’s Music program, will showcase the different types of learning that has been taking place in that grade level over the past while. Knowing that it is sometimes difficult to get away during a workday, we still invite parents of students in that grade level to come and see the performance if they are able to.

Our Celebrations of Learning are getting kicked off by the grade 5’s next Friday (Oct. 16th). All celebrations will occur on Fridays at 10:00, and the schedule for the year looks like this:

Dec. 4th & 11th - Kindergarten

January 22nd - Grade 4

March 12th - Grade 3

April 16th - Grade 2

May 14th - Grade 1

Ms. MacDonald will be hosting our Remembrance Assembly on Friday, Nov. 6th.
