The Dot
Ms. Grandberg’s grade 2 class recently used the Peter H Reynolds book, “The Dot” to look at some Health & Wellness, Language Arts and Art aspects of the grade 2 curriculum.
If you were to encourage someone who is important to you, who would it be? What would you do to help or support them? Reinforcing the idea that we can have a positive impact on the lives of people who are close to us is an important piece for young students. This work aligns with the efforts we put forth everyday forging our classroom and school communities.

The form is open to families until Oct. 16th, 2026.
The Way the Wind Blows in Grade 5
How does the wind influence people’s lives? How can it influence different types of jobs?
Grade 5 students are studying weather and climate as part of their Earth Systems science unit. They recently constructed a wind vane to help measure wind direction. They designed and constructed them in the classroom, then tested them outside in different parts of the school grounds. Students learned how to measure and interpret wind vane data, as well as who might use wind direction information in their daily lives.

Video Surveillance
New this year, Hawkwood School has a video surveillance system to help maintain a safe and secure environment at the school for students, staff and the public, and to help address vandalism and criminal activity on school property.
The video surveillance system is installed and reviewed in accordance with Administrative Regulation 1066. Personal information is collected under the authority of the Education Act and the Protection of Privacy Act (POPA), specifically section 10(1) and the Access to Information Act (ATIA).
This technology can be placed in areas such as the school parking lot, building entrances and exits, stairwells and hallways. This information is recorded and collected to help maintain a safe and secure environment in the school and on school property. The users of this information are the principal or designate and law enforcement personnel in the case of reported incidents that would require an investigation. Only authorized persons will review video surveillance information.
Inquiries concerning the video surveillance system, or the collection and use of recorded information may be made by contacting the school office.
Have a great week!
