Hawkwood School Literacy Night

Used Books

Thank you to all families who attended our Literacy Night this week! It was so great to come together around effective supports for supporting reading and writing development at home. For those who were not able to attend, here is the link to the information provided to parents about the Science of Reading as well as links to the activities that teachers featured at each station: Hawkwood Literacy Night Parent Information.

We would like to thank the Calgary Public Library for partnering with us and attending our event with their Mobile Book Truck. They were very busy signing kids up for library cards and sending families off with books! We encourage all families to visit the Library to help students develop a love of reading!

Self-Reflection Through Art

What colours would you say represent you? What words would you use to represent different aspects of who you are?

Ms. McLellan’s grade 4’s recently created cool self-portraits while exploring some of these very questions. Students created self-portraits using different types of painting and colouring techniques. This included mixing paint colours to represent their own skin tone and hair colour.

Inside the folded artwork, students created collages of words and images they felt represented parts of who they are. They also included a bio-poem that they created. This fun activity included different learner outcomes from the Language Arts and Art curriculums.

Calgary Opera Presents Little Red Riding Hood

RR 4

Earlier this week, we were treated to a great live performance as Calgary Opera presented the classic Little Red Riding Hood. All 700 of our students were very engaged through the 40 minute performance. Big thank you to Ms. MacDonald for organizing this very cool event. This is another great example of how our Hawkwood School Council and Friends Society have a positive impact on our school community every day.
