What is Number Fluency?
In your child’s report card or during the recent student-led conferences, you may have heard the term number or math fluency. We often hear the term fluency when describing a child’s ability to read, but can the same term be used when talking about Math? Yes, it can.
Fluency in Math takes on a different meaning than it does in reading, but it is equally as important to a student’s success. Some people think of recall, or a student’s ability to memorize Math facts when they hear the term fluency used in Math. While this helps, there is much more to fluency in Math than quick recall. Here are some of the things that are included when thinking about a child’s fluency when it comes to Math.
Accuracy
There are different skills involved in being a good Math student, but your ability to find the correct answer is still very important.
Efficiency
Is the time it takes a student to solve the problem, relative to the complexity of the problem, reasonable? Selecting the appropriate strategy to solve the problem is important.
Flexibility
Can a student take a strategy that they already know and apply it to a new problem? Can they adapt that strategy to fit the new problem better?
Math is a very scaffolded curriculum. What a student learns one year, becomes the building blocks for the following year. If students understand the why and how of what they are doing, they will better position themselves as successful Math students in years to come.
How Many Ways Can You Be Kind?
Ms. Penner’s grade 1 class reminds us that being kind does not have to be a huge thing. There are little things that we can do each day to be kind to the other people in our lives. Pro-Tip: Being kind is not only good for the people who receive the kindness, but also for the people demonstrating the kindness.
