How Can Technology Impact Learning?

Technology has become a pervasive part of our everyday life, but what impact does it have on our modern classrooms? One of the biggest ways is access to online resources. These resources can be used by teachers to support the instructional design and assessment process. Even newer, printed resources most often have corresponding online components. This is also true for students in terms of research. Access to knowledge, up to date knowledge, has never been greater. In recent years, our older students have been improving their skills in the areas of fact checking and lateral reading. Access is no longer a challenge, but finding ways of determining what is real and what is not in the online environment has become more important.

Technology Supporting Personalized Learning

Technology also plays a significant role in supporting the many different types of learners we have in our classrooms. We know that one-size-fits-all does not work for many of our students in terms of learning tasks, this is also true of how technology gets used in a classroom. While the learner outcomes from our curriculums are the same for everyone, how each student gets there and demonstrates their understanding can look very different. Whether it is a “speech to text” process on a laptop or a specific app on an iPad, technology supports our learners in many different ways.

Increased Access

Through the generous support of our Friends of Hawkwood School Society and School Council, funding from older decommissioned devices, and school funds, we have significantly increased the number of devices available to teachers and students. We have added 60 Chromebooks in two mobile carts, and 60 iPads in two mobile carts. We have also increased the number of devices that “live” in each classroom that students can access when they need to depending on their learning needs.

Technology as a Tool, Not as a Subject

Our students still spend most of their days reading, writing, collaborating and creating. Technology is just a means of supporting this work that is not much different than a pencil, a ruler, or a book. As we figure out ways in which technology impacts our own daily lives, our students are finding out ways in which technology can support their own learning pathways.
