Spring Break is Here!

There will be no classes for students at Hawkwood School starting Friday, March 22 through to Monday, April 1st. Students return to class on Tuesday, April 2nd.

We hope our students and families take this time to rest, explore, connect, re-connect, eat, sleep, play and learn. Whatever it is that “fills your bucket” and recharges your batteries. Current weather patterns make planning outdoor activities a bit difficult, but not impossible if dressed appropriately.

Phenomenal Food Trucks

If you could build your own food truck, what would it look like? How are food and Math connected?

Mrs. Tran’s Grade 4 class have been exploring some real-world applications of some of their learner outcomes in Math. Each student created a theme for their food truck, along with a menu. The next step was to create customer orders based on their menus and then calculate the totals and the change. For the grade 4 curriculum, they were, however, spared the pain of tax and tipping.

In addition to some financial literacy outcomes from the Health curriculum, students also explored the following learner outcomes from the Math curriculum as they expanded their entrepreneurial skills:

  • I can express monetary values in cents and dollars using decimal notation.
  • I can add and subtract natural numbers, (including decimals), using standard algorithms.
  • I can solve problems using addition and subtraction, including problems involving money.

Have a great break, and we will see you April 2nd.
