Hawkwood School Terry Fox Run - Sep. 13th

By example, Terry Fox led us to believe we can all make a difference in the lives of others. Step-by-step he ran, and on Friday, September 13th, 2024, step-by-step our students will run alongside his inspiration during the Hawkwood School Terry Fox Run.

We have also asked Hawkwood students to take part in a fundraising activity to help further support Terry Fox’s dream to raise money for cancer research. This initiative is called #Toonies4Terry. Funds donated will help to ensure continued research into the treatment and cure of cancer.

Beginning Monday September 9th, donations will be accepted and we will continue accepting donations until Friday September 20th before making Hawkwood School’s final contribution amount to the Terry Fox Foundation. Your child will receive a fundraising form from school to assist in tracking donations made by family members and friends.

Picture Day - Sep. 18th

Your child received one of these Lifetouch Flyers yesterday from their teacher. Picture Day this year is on September 18th. All students have their individual pictures taken. Parents have the option of ordering different types of photo packages on line at mylifetouch.ca. Class pictures will be scheduled and taken on a different day later in the school year.

K - 3 Diagnostic Assessments

The province of Alberta is continuing the use of Universal Screeners for students in Kindergarten to grade 3. These screeners are assessments that measure a student’s proficiency in different skills, primarily literacy and numeracy. Assessing learners in their early years:

 ▪ Provides essential information to teachers, schools, parents and Alberta Education about potential learning issues and needs.

 ▪ Ensures learners get the help they need early in their education.

 ▪ Monitors growth over time.

 ▪ Supports a transparent, accountable, and responsive education system

It is important to remember that these screeners do not replace day to day assessments that take place in class and they do not have any impact on report cards. The data collected from the screeners help teachers and schools plan instructional design and enable them to meet the individual needs of their learners.

Have a great week!
