What Can Math Look Like in Grade 1?
You may not remember, but a lot of our early understanding of Math concepts are developed around patterns. When our students look for patterns and even make some of our own, they create the building blocks for the math concepts that they will need later on. Our grade 1’s were recently inspired to create some of their own patterns by listening to some read alouds and doing some exploration of materials, poems, songs and body pattern movements.
Not only is this fun, but is also achieve some of the outcomes in the grade 1 curriculum including:
- Recognizing first letters in their names
- Differentiating between upper and lower case letters
- Creating an original pattern of two or three repeating elements within a defined space.

School Emails and CASL
Are you getting all of the emails sent from school? Are you up to date on what the school, the school council and school society are up to? Are you missing out on events and opportunities to connect?
If you feel you are not getting all the information you could about school activities, you may need to subscribe to CASL (Canada’s Anti-Spam Legislation). This federal legislation regulates the type of messages that can be sent to our parents. Specifically, any messages that have to do with funding, fundraising or finance. These could include messages on field trips, fun lunches, student fees, picture days, fundraisers and more. Don’;t miss out. All the information you need to know can be found on our System CASL Page. Building School Community Through Buddies
We talk a lot about “school community” and the crucial role it plays in creating and maintaining a safe and caring learning environment. Despite many other influences, we know that children learn best when they feel safe and connected to people around them. One of the ways we achieve this is through our Class Buddies. Each of our K-3 classes is buddied up with one of our 4-6 classes. These classes will occasionally (often weekly) pair up around some project or special activity. It is a good way to build school connections beyond students’ homeroom class, and it is also a lot of fun and something that our students look forward to. Here are some examples of what a few of our Kindergarten students created recently with the help of their grade 6 buddies.
Parent Resources Supporting the Literacy and Mathematics Frameworks
Literacy support videos have been created to introduce families to the teaching practice of Phonological Awareness within CBE Literacy Framework.
An introduction video, along with at-home activity videos (isolating, blending, segmenting and manipulating phonemes), is available on CBE Education Plan webpage. Additionally, a Math support parent resource has been created to introduce families to the teaching practice of Use and Connect Mathematical Representations.
Have a great week!
