Student Led Conferences Coming Soon!

Your opportunity to see first hand what your child has been up to these first few weeks of school is coming up on October 24 and 25. This is a few weeks earlier than it has been in previous years due to some restrictions with our system calendar. While the conversations between parents and teachers are crucial, the participation of the student in this process is equally as important. Being able to articulate and show what they have learned and how they have grown is an important part of their development and also increases their level of ownership over their own learning.

The scheduling is a bit different between Kindergarten and grades 1-6, but below is a summary of the when and the how of this year’s Student Led Conferences.

Conferences will open to parents to book Sunday October 13th at midnight. For those with more than one student at Hawkwood you now have the ability to view Multiple teacher calendars at the same time when booking.

How Many Different Ways Can Numbers be Represented?

The possibilities are endless. Part of the understanding of early Math skills is learning that numbers represent other things. There are lots of different, cool ways to represent numbers other than using just a numeral. Creating meaning around the things that they are learning is a very important aspect of early childhood development. Finding different ways in which students can create and express this meaning is also very important.

Ms. Campanelli’s grade 1 class recently used Donald Crew’s book, Ten Black Dots to inspire them to find different ways of representing numbers. Some of the results are pretty cool.

Communications at Hawkwood School

We are all fully immersed in this age of information and communications. Our challenge is no longer accessing information but how to navigate the quantity of information that we have access to. The following is a summary of the best way to stay connected with what is happening in the Hawkwood School Community.

Classroom Information

Your first stop for any and all information connected to your child’s classroom will be their Google Classroom. Each homeroom teacher makes multiple posts each week around learning topics, special events and upcoming adventures. Each child has a login and password that will remain consistent throughout the school year. If you need help logging in, please connect with your child’s teacher via phone or email.

School and System Information

The Hawkwood School Website is the best place to get up to date information from the school and the CBE. We share a Principal’s Blog each Friday, and news and stories from the system are updated regularly as well.

School Messenger

We often use School Messenger to send out school -wide information and announcements connected to learning, events, system and provincial updates and sometimes fundraising or events connected with Hawkwood School Council or Friends of Hawkwood School Society. In order to receive all school messages, including the ones connected to finance and fundraising, all families are required to actively subscribe as per federal CASL regulations. Information about CASL and how to subscribe can be found HERE.

Facebook

Like us on Facebook for news, pics and quick updates on what we are up to.

How Being Thankful Can Impact us in a Positive Way

This is a repeat article that was first shared last year. With the Thanksgiving long weekend , we thought it would be a good idea to share it again. Remember, there is no school on Monday, October 14th.

There is something we all like about being appreciated. When someone else notices something that we have done, accomplished, or contributed, we feel like we are making an impact, helping or contributing in a positive way. An often overlooked aspect of gratitude is the impact that it can have on the person that is being grateful.

Our lives as parents and teachers are filled with busy times, busy days and lots of different demands placed on us, including many that we place on ourselves. When sometimes things do not go as planned, or how we wanted them to go, we can focus too much time and energy on the negative aspects of our lives.

By intentionally looking for things to be grateful for each day, we can often change our outlook and attitude. By doing this, we shift our focus from things that are negative to ones that we see and understand as positive. Doing this regularly can have a tremendously positive impact on our level of resiliency, how we interact with people, even our productivity.

This weekend, think of something each day that you are grateful for. Hint: this process is more effective when practiced outside.

Have a great week!
