What Are My Kids Going to Do This Summer?
This is a big question for most families as the summer months get closer. The advantage of living in a city like Calgary is there are lots of options. You can even tailor some of your choices based on your child’s interests. The City of Calgary Summer Day Camps offers many different types of activities including sailing, gymnastics, art, outdoor activities, explore sports and rock climbing.
The University of Calgary also offers many different types of Summer Camp Adventures for children in Calgary. These include gymnastics, coding, gaming, geoventure, backpacking, canoeing and many more that still have spots remaining for this summer. They also offer many sport-based camps including volleyball, basketball, hockey, football, soccer and figure skating. A list of these can be found HERE.
School Curriculums - The “What” of our Work.
In our modern classrooms, teachers are the designers of learning. The goal is to take each student from where they are and move them ahead from there. The pathway that each teacher and learner takes along the way can be very different. Today’s teachers need many different tools in their toolbox because the needs within each of our classrooms are very diverse. Although the outcomes are common for each grade level, how and when a student achieves them can vary greatly, and that is ok. Teachers design their instructional tasks to be accessible for many different types of learners.
Each school year has learner outcomes attached to curriculums, or subjects, that students are required to meet. These are the “what” of our work and they are determined by the province of Alberta. We often get questions about different aspects of some of these curriculums. In recent years, many of these curriculums have been updated to reflect a more current understanding of what our children will need to be successful in the future. The contents of these curriculums are publicly available and can be found on the Learn Alberta website. There is even a section designed specifically for parents that can answer most of your questions about curriculum, or any other school related matters.
Have a great week!
