Can Cupcakes be Connected to Physics?
Our grade 3 classes recently explored the world of cupcakes and simple machines. Inspired by the book Operation Cupcake by Canadian author and illustrator Bambi Edlund, our students were tasked with the following mission:
- In a team, design a simple machine that would be capable of bringing a cupcake home unscathed.
When things are heavy, in a high position, or hard to move, what do you do? Cupcakes are valuable and not that sturdy so some thoughtful planning, prototyping, testing and care were required. The results are currently on display in our Learning Commons.
What Does Pride Month Mean in Elementary School?
For our school community that hosts students and families from 42 different countries, Hawkwood School has always celebrated diversity as something that makes us stronger. Throughout the year, there are many opportunities to acknowledge and celebrate dates that are significant to students, staff and communities. Some examples include the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Black History Month, Asian Heritage Month and National Indigenous History Month.
Pride Month is an opportunity to promote a respectful and inclusive school community where everyone belongs. During the month, we recognize the diversity in schools and communities and highlight that schools are welcoming, caring, respectful, and safe environments for all students, families and staff, including those who are part of the 2SLGBTQ+ community.
Pride Month activities are also aligned with Alberta provincial curriculum with a focus on building positive relationships, respect and understanding of different cultures and experiences, and reducing discrimination.
Appetizing Alliteration
Grade 4 Tran recently took a tasty approach during their work on literary devices. Inspired by Jack Prelutsky poem, “Bleezer’s Ice Cream”, they used their taste buds to guide their work learning about alliteration as they created some very unique ice cream flavors. Maybe you will see some of them at your favourite ice cream place this summer.
Have a great week!
