Bullying Awareness & Prevention Week - Nov. 17th
A big part of our work with young students involves conflict resolution. As our students share space in their classrooms and 600+ of them share playing space outside, conflicts come up everyday. We invest heavily in teaching our students how to self-regulate, respond to and de-escalate issues when they arise. We also teach them how to seek out and ask for help.
Not all behaviour issues that arise between students at school are cases of bullying. The skills needed to navigate small and larger groups successfully are just that, skills. Students need to learn them just like they learn how to read and add. Bullying occurs when there is a repeated pattern and is, most often, intentional. The provincial government has published some resources for Bullying Awareness Week that are worthy of a look. The CBE has also shared some great ideas on how bullying can be prevented on their Bullying Prevention page. More system resources around bullying can be found within the CBE Student Code of Conduct as well as the Progressive Student Discipline Philosophy.
