Hawkwood School Council / Society Read-a-Thon
Thank you to all of our Hawkwood School families for supporting this year’s Read-a-Thon, it was incredibly successful.
A whopping total 66,042 minutes read!!! That’s 1,101 hours and 10 minutes.
Grade 2 had the most readers at 24 and grade 5 had the highest minutes read at 25,382.
In addition to all of that reading, we also hosted a “dress as your favourite book character” day on Friday, April 11th and many of our classrooms also decorated their doors honoring their favourite books.
Our School Council and Friends of Hawkwood School Society generously sponsored prizes at each grade level for the top readers, as well as some draws for all students who participated.

Calgary Food Bank
We want to be sure and thank all members of our Hawkwood School Community who supported this year’s Mayor’s Christmas Food Drive. Through the efforts of our staff, students and school council and the contributions of our families, we were able to donate over 500 pounds of food and $125. This type of support directly impacts the communities that we live and the families we share them with.
Celebrating Diversity Through Grade 1 Social Studies
Part of the grade 1 Social Studies Curriculum includes the examination of our past as we look forward. Our diverse school community provides a tremendous opportunity to learn about many different “pasts” from around the world. To celebrate this, grade 1 students brought in an “artifact” to their Classroom Museum that celebrated their family traditions, languages, food and culture. Students had an opportunity to explain their artifact to visitors to the museum and why it is important.
School Waste Report
Our most recent School Waste Report provided by CBE indicates we are surpassing our goals when it comes to how we handle waste at Hawkwood School. The system provides a “per student” based monthly formula when it comes to waste removal and the fees that are associated with it.
If we exceed the monthly goal of 0.03, the charges we would incur from additional waste removal would be charged back to our school budget. By remaining within or under this monthly target, we are able to maintain the same level of funding that supports all of our learning programs. Thank you to our Hawkwood School Families that continue to support our “pack it in - pack it out” lunch program. Your efforts enable us to keep hitting our monthly targets and maintain funding levels for our classrooms.
Remember!
Have a great long weekend!
