Read-a-Thon Starts this Week!

Our Hawkwood School Council and Friends of Hawkwood School Society partners are again creating that magical time of year! The READ-A-THON is back April 4-13th! This is a fun, school wide event that encourages a love of reading and a chance to win prizes!

Here is How It Works

● Students secure pledges on read-a-thon tracker sheet. (Send home by their classroom teacher)

● Students read as much as they can outside of school from April 4-13th and keep track of the number of minutes they read (ideal daily).

● Tally total reading minutes and collect pledge money from supporters.

● Submit tracking sheet & pledge form to

hawkwoodsociety@gmail.com. (Please include your child’s name and their teacher’s name in the body of the email).

● Send the total pledge money raised to the Friends of Hawkwood School Society by e-transfer to hawkwoodsociety@gmail.com. Please include both your child’s name and their teacher’s name in the comments with your e-transfer.

The Extra Fun Stuff: Activities & Prizes Activities

● Random “Stop, drop & read!” announcements will be made daily at school. Students get to pause what they’re doing, grab a book and read on the spot for 5 minutes.

● The school hallways will turn into a visual library. Every classroom gets to decorate their door like a book cover or storyline from a book that the students and their teacher enjoy.

● “Dress Up as Your Favourite Book Character” day. Mark your calendars and prepare a fun (no weapons) costume to celebrate everyone’s reading accomplishments.

Are You Planning a Move or Change in Schools?

The planning process for the forthcoming 2024-2025 school year is in full swing. The amount of funding that our school receives is directly tied to enrollment. The challenge is that although we have to create a staffing plan and budget by the end of April, our final funding amount is determined by what our actual enrollment is by the end of September.

In order to make the best plan we can, we need the most accurate enrollment numbers we can develop. Will your children be returning to Hawkwood School in the Fall? Are you planning a move or change in schools over the summer? If so, please read below:

  • K-4 - Provide student name and what school they will be attending
  • Current Gr. 5’s living in Hawkwood will be designated to Arbour Lake School - no action is required.
  • Current Gr. 5’s living in Sage Hill will be returning to Hawkwood School for Gr. 6 - no action required
  • Current Gr. 6’s will be designated to FE Osborne School - no action required.

If everything is status quo with your family, we do not need to hear from you. If not, please reach out to our office at 403-777-6410, ext. 0 or send us an email at Hawkwood@cbe.ab.ca

Grade 6 Indigenous Flute Project

Part of our Truth and Reconciliation commitment includes integrating indigenous ways of knowing into all aspects of our curriculum. This also includes Music. Ms. MacDonald has recently created an Indigenous Flute Project with our grade 6 students.

Students have been working on a project of designing their own Indigenous style flutes. They were asked to reflect on the question, “What connects you to the land?” They will use their individual responses to this question to design and paint their own Indigenous style flutes. The prep work was started prior to Spring Break and the painting will begin soon. Stay tuned!

Successful Book Fair

Huge thank you to our Hawkwood School Community for supporting our Spring Book Fair. We generated almost $13,000.00 in sales which translates into just under $6000.00 in cash and scholastic book credits. These results will enable us to maintain the high quality of books and resources available to our students everyday in our Learning Commons.

Ms. Allison also wishes to recognize the huge contributions by her team of volunteers who were very busy throughout the week and also helped with set-up and take down. What a team!
