Labour Action

Each year the CBE manages many different collective agreements with many different groups. One of these groups, CUPE Local 40, served 72-hour strike notice to the CBE on Feb. 19th. This means that the union will withdraw services beginning Monday, Feb. 24, 2025.

During strike action, all CBE schools and buildings, including Hawkwood will remain open and classes will continue. With this in mind, there will be some impacts felt at the school level specific to cleaning and access to school after instructional hours. This could potentially impact upcoming Student Led Conferences which are scheduled in-person for the evening of Feb. 27th. Confirmation will be sent to Hawkwood School Families early next week. For the most current information relative to the labour action, please check out the CBE Labour Action Page.

Dinosaurs in Kindergarten

Kindergarten students know a lot about dinosaurs. To find out just how much of the learning comes in the form of questions, starting with, “What do we know about dinosaurs?” and “What do we wonder about Dinosaurs”? This, of course, leads to more questions.

How big were dinosaurs? What did they eat? How are fossils made? Here is a great collection of the fossils that our Kindies have created.

Exploring Alberta with Grade 4

A recent exploration of Alberta natural regions included a closer look at the buffalo and how significant they were to the Blackfoot People. Making connections within the geography and the indigenous teachings, students were able to demonstrate their understanding by using acrylic paint, watercolor pencils and different brush and sketching techniques. The buffalo is a symbol of strength, resilience and the importance of honoring the land and all living things.

Art as Assessment

Many students can demonstrate their understanding of many different curricular outcomes through Art projects. This can include concepts learned in Science, Social Studies, or Math or even outcomes associated with Art itself.
