School Fees - Special Activities at Risk
We are continuously looking for different ways to engage our students in learning. This will often take the forms of special programs, experiences or field trips. While all of these activities are tied to provincial curriculum, they are not mandatory and fall outside of what we are funded for. Because of this, fees are charged to offset the cost.
Over the past couple of years it has become increasingly more difficult to collect these fees. As a large school, the bulk of our budget is tied to staffing. Our operating budget is actually quite small which makes it very difficult for us to manage carrying costs. For example, at the end of last school year, we were short $8000 just for our Ski School alone.
Our ability to augment our regular program with things like field trips, Outdoor School and Ski School is directly tied to being able to collect fees for those activities in a timely manner.
Within the next week, fees for Ski School (grades 4-6) will be posted. There will be a seperate fee of $57.50 for each ski day. In order for us to avoid canceling this activity this year, it is important these fees are paid prior to the program beginning at the end of the month.
We know the current economic climate has created challenges for families. The CBE has a comprehensive Waiver Process that families can apply for. Our Hawkwood School Council and Friends of Hawkwood School Society for many years have supported these activities by directing fundraising dollars towards offsetting the costs of these special programs.
If you have any questions about fees or the CBE Waiver Process, or how to access community programs like Kidsport, we would love to hear from you.

Teacher Professional Learning
The quantity and variety of skills needed to be a successful teacher in today’s diverse classrooms seems to increase each year. Part of being a successful educator means that you are also a lifelong learner. Our teachers embrace this part of their work and are looking forward to this year's Calgary City Teachers Convention. Sessions on any and all aspects of being a professional educator can be found at this convention in the Telus Convention Centre on Feb. 13 & 14 (no school).
Our teaching and support staff will be sharing some of their adventures and new learning during our Friday Professional Time sessions over the next few weeks.
