Exploring Materials and Recreating Calgary Landmarks?

In Grade 2 Science, students dive into the fascinating world of materials and building, guided by the Alberta Science curriculum. Through engaging experiments and hands-on activities, students learn to identify and explore the properties of different materials—such as wood, metal, and fabric—and how they influence how we use them in everyday life. Learner outcomes include:

  • I can describe the properties of materials, like how soft or strong they are.
  • I can use different materials to build a strong and stable structure.
  • I can test my design to see if it’s stable and strong, and make changes to improve it.

Through this hands-on approach, Grade 2 students gain valuable skills in observation, experimentation, and teamwork, while deepening their understanding of how materials shape the world around us. Oh, and more importantly, it is a lot of fun!

Fitset Ninja Residency - Hawkwood School Council / Society

Over the past week or so, our students have been enjoying the curricular outcomes delivered in a different way. Fitset Ninja, a local company, have been in residency at Hawkwood School for the past while. Gross motor movement, balance, coordination, spacial awareness, body awareness are just some of the areas covered by this program. Oh, and it is a lot of fun.

It is also important to note that the entire cost of this residency ($16,000) is being paid by the Hawkwood School Council / Friends of Hawkwood School Society. Our friends and partners do a wonderful job supporting our school in every way. Programs like these are extra and are a direct result of their work and fundraising efforts which means they get delivered at no cost to our Hawkwood School families.

Waste Reduction at Hawkwood School

The CBE works directly with the City of Calgary on ways we can minimize the impact that our schools have on the local environment. One of the strategies in this work includes monthly targets for waste production. The current goal is 0.03 cubic yards of waste per student per month. So far this school year, we have averaged 0.247 cubic yards of waste per student per month. Thank you to all of our Hawkwood School families for supporting our efforts around “pack it in-pack it out” lunches. Finding healthy lunch options that young students will eat everyday can be challenging. Alberta Health Services has some great ideas for student lunches and the nutrition that comes with them. Check them out at “What’s For Lunch?” The more reusable containers are part of our daily lunch routines the less waste we will produce both at school and at home. Thank you for supporting our waste reduction efforts.

Seasonal Celebrations

Our Hawkwood School families will be celebrating many religious and culturally significant days over the next few weeks and months. While the origins of these can be quite different, many of the themes that run through them are common. Being thankful, spending time with our families, celebrating and giving, are just a few.

Hawkwood School is very thankful for the support we get from all of our wonderful families. We hope our students and families have a safe, happy and fun break from school. We are looking forward to seeing you back with us on Monday, January 6th.

Have a great break!
