November 29th Professional Learning Day
Last Friday, our teaching and support staff were engaged in professional learning in three different areas. These days are crucial to our success in meeting the diverse needs we see in our classrooms each day.
What strategies will help all of our students self-regulate in our inclusive classrooms?
We hosted CBE Inclusive Education Learning Leaders Leah LeBouthillier and Jasmine Sweeney as they walked us through multiple strategies that support independence and learner autonomy. Setting all of our students up for success by providing visual frameworks and routines, will foster their ability to self-guide their own learning.
How can we engage our students while building their Math fluency?
With the support of some provincial funding targeted towards new curriculum areas, last year we purchased Building Math Fluency kits for use in all of our classrooms. Over the past few months we have been learning how to integrate these kits into our Math blocks. On Friday, we had teachers from Div. I and Div. II showcase some of their successes with different parts of the kits. Math vocabulary, games and Math talks all add to students' success when it comes to recalling facts, understanding different strategies and when and how to apply them effectively.
What is a Writing Rope?
Teaching reading is a very complex process. You may not remember learning how to read but it took years. It also involved many different types of skills that needed to be mastered. All of these skills are included in what is called the “Reading Rope”. If one or more of these skills are missing or underdeveloped, this could create issues for a student who is trying to master the reading process.
On Friday, we learned how to support our students' writing development by looking at The Writing Rope.
Similar to the Reading rope, the Writing Rope includes all of the different sub-skills needed to become a successful writer. It is also important to remember that the writing process is something that takes years. It is intentionally taught from Kindergarten to Grade 12, and sometimes beyond. The Writing Rope helps support our teacher’s work by highlighting all of the different aspects of writing that need to be included at different points as part of our comprehensive literacy program.
