What Can You Learn From Making Owls?
When you are weaving, you are dealing with patterns. When you have patterns, you are dealing with Math. Ms. Wishart’s grade 3 class recently constructed some very creative owls by weaving. Creating art by experimenting with different media, materials and techniques is a way of demonstrating their understanding. They also built some other owls by tearing and overlapping paper. The owl adventure was connected to some of the work they were doing in literacy around the book “Owls in the Family” by Farley Mowat.
Self-Care for Parents During the Busy Holidays
Our partners at Alberta Health are always thinking about ways they can support families. This also includes ideas associated with the holiday season. As parents, we have a first hand understanding of the pressures that surface during this time of the year. Sometimes the best way to support your children is to make sure you support yourself. Check out some of their latest ideas on how to “put on your own life jacket first” and balance your own wellness with that of your family during this holiday season by Showing Yourself Some Love.
Fluency in Math - Beyond the Facts
When we think of fluency in Math, we often think about recalling our multiplication or addition facts. While these things are foundational to developing more complex Math skills, fluency in Math goes beyond just the facts.
- Knowledge of procedures
- Knowledge of when and how to use them effectively
- Skill in performing them flexibly, accurately and efficiently
To support this work, last year we purchased Building Fact Fluency Kits. These kits use multiple learning modes to build up the foundational pieces that create future success in Math for our students.
Have a great week!!
