Modern Day Pen Pals

Ms. Pflug's grade 3 class participated in a Pen Pal activity with a Leadership class from Robert Thirsk High School. Since the beginning of May, her students have been writing letters back and forth every week. This offered the grade 3's an authentic audience to help them with their writing! For many of our students, as well as the high school students, this was the first time they have ever written and sent a letter. On Friday, June 5th, Ms. Pflug's class and the Leadership class from Rober Thirsk finally met! We had an amazing afternoon getting to know our Pen Pals!

National Indigenous Peoples History Month

FNMI Month

This month is an opportunity to honour the histories, cultures, and resilience of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples across Canada. We acknowledge the contributions of Indigenous peoples to our society, their enduring cultures, languages, and traditions, and their incredible resilience in the face of historical and ongoing challenges.

To learn more about what is happening in Calgary and how we integrate the Indigenous Education Holistic Lifelong Learning Framework into our everyday teaching and learning, check out the CBE Honoring National Indigenous Peoples History Month webpage.

Hawkwood School and our Grade 2 classes will be hosting a National Indigenous Peoples assembly on Friday, June 19th at 10:15.

Provincial Class Size Reduction Grant

News

We are pleased to share that Hawkwood school has been allocated 2 additional teaching position(s) for the 2026–27 school year through the Government of Alberta’s Class Size Reduction Grant.

This grant funds teaching positions that support improved learning conditions in kindergarten to Grade 9 classrooms.

This funding is specifically intended to help reduce class sizes in core subject areas (English Language Arts/French Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies), with priority given to schools experiencing the greatest class size pressures.

For us at Hawkwood School, this will have the biggest impact by reducing the size of our grade 3 and grade 4 homeroom classes next year.

Stampede Breakfast

Huge shout out to our Hawkwood School Council & Friends Society and the Stampede Caravan for a wonderful stampede breakfast. Getting 1000+ people fed a hot breakfast in less than two hours is a bit of a task. Good food, good times and great people. Yeeee Haw!!

Hawkwood School Patrollers

Grade 5 and 6 students all across Calgary have been helping students and families cross the street safely in our school zones for decades. This year’s team of patrollers got to spend the day at Heritage Park this week with other patrollers from across the city as part of the annual Patrol Picnic.
