Student Safety

Despite a well-planned safety net, many of our students still face the occasional risk getting to and from school safely each day. While most of these are beyond their control, one of the biggest sources of risk for our students are our parent drivers. Our busy lives will often inadvertently put things like timing, weather and convenience ahead of safety resulting in an elevated level of risk for our students. Here are a few of the most common things we see everyday that increase the level of risk for our students as they come to and from school.

Parking Lot - Please do not drop-off or pick up students in the parking lot. This is likely the most dangerous place for children to get in and out of your vehicle.

Crosswalks - Please do not park on, or within 5 metres of, our crosswalks. This will enConessure that children and parents are seen by drivers as they cross the street. Always use the crosswalks. Jaywalking with your children increases the risks to them and you and also models dangerous behaviour. Oh, and u-turns on a crosswalk are a bad idea everywhere, particularly in a school zone.

Bus Zones - We now have 7 buses that load and unload about 350 students each day. Pay attention to signs and avoid these areas while dropping off and picking up.

Patrols - We have grade 5 students working as patrols on our busiest crosswalk. They are there to increase the safety levels for everyone, be patient and pay attention.

Thank you for doing all that you can to keep our students safe.

Hawkwood School Council / Friends Society

If you haven’t yet connected with our partners at the Hawkwood School Council or Friends of Hawkwood School Society, you really should. This amazing group of people support our students and teachers every day and contribute to our school community in too many ways to count. Oh, and they are a lot of fun!  Check them out, you will be glad you did.
