Learning Technology and Support
The CBE process of “evergreening” our technology devices involves replacing older, outdated devices with newer ones once they reach their end of life and can no longer be supported. This happens each school year. This year we will be getting 30 new iPads and 30 new Chromebooks. While the cost of these devices is covered by system funding, the carts that house the new technology are not. At about $3000 per cart, the costs are significant.
This is yet another way that our Friends of Hawkwood School Society support us and our students every day. In addition to field trips, artists in residency programs, special events and performances, they are covering the costs of these carts. This will significantly extend the life of the tech devices and make them more accessible for all of our students. Thank you again to our Hawkwood School Council and Friends of Hawkwood School Society.
Lunchtime Reminders
Some things to keep in mind as you assemble your child’s lunches each day. In order to minimize the amount of garbage we generate, we practice a “pack it in-pack it out” policy with lunches. As a school, our garbage gets tracked each month and if we go over a set amount, the cost comes out of our school budget. Also, if you are giving your child something in their lunch that requires cutlery, the school cannot provide them with forks or spoons. Happy eating!!
Battery Blitz Update
Did you know that one of the leading causes of fires at city landfills and waste management facilities is the improper disposal of batteries? Following our visit from Earth Rangers in the fall, we joined their conservation efforts by participating in the Battery Blitz Contest. Thanks to the incredible efforts of our school community, we collected 9 full boxes of batteries to send safely to the recycling depot—helping to keep our landfill safer and our environment cleaner. A special thank you to the students in Mrs. Tran’s and Ms. Pearson’s classes for carefully packaging the batteries so they could be safely transported and disposed of. Amazing work, Hawkwood!
Have a great week! Stay Warm!
