Naturalization Project
Years ago, we imagined a space on our school grounds where students could gather for different types of learning experiences outside. These would include curricular-based examinations of plants and vegetation, seasonal changes, indigenous ways of knowing, sharing, collaboration, Art and Music.
Through the direct support of our Friends of Hawkwood School Society, this vision is becoming a reality. Following the completion of a detailed landscape design plan last year, we have begun work on Phase # 1 of our naturalization project. This phase will include all of the hardscaping parts of the plan. Phase # 2 of the plan will include all of the vegetation, trees, shrubs and some fencing.
In addition to paying for the project design, which is required by CBE, our Friends Society has dedicated $60,000 to the first phase of this project. All of their fundraising efforts have a direct impact on the quality of programming we are able to provide at Hawkwood School. Beyond this project, this includes field trips, social events, student access to learning technology, library resources, Fun Lunches and much more.

Lunchroom Reminders
Like all CBE elementary schools, we host a lunchroom program. The money collected for this program pays for the supervisors for the students during their indoor eating time, as well as their outdoor play time. This enables students to stay at school during lunchtime.
Finding something healthy that your child will eat that can also be packed in a lunch kit can be challenging. Here are a few reminders that will help to ensure your child’s lunch experience is a positive one.
- Pack it In, Pack it Out. Our school pays a monthly fee for the amount of waste we produce. If we exceed a preset amount, the balance gets pulled from our operating budget. Packing it home also gives parents a first-hand look at what their child is eating and what they are not.
- Cutlery. If your child’s lunch requires any type of cutlery, it will need to be included in their lunch kit.
- Heating. For safety reasons, we are not permitted to have children access microwaves or hot water.
- Ready to Eat. With only 20 minutes for students to eat, they do not have a lot of time for prepping their food, like peeling oranges. If their food is ready to eat, it will greatly increase their chances of getting the nutrition they need for learning in the afternoon.
Community Resources
The Calgary Board of Education invites all parents and guardians to join a live online series on supporting child and youth well-being. The series is hosted by the Recovery Alberta Community Education Service (CES) Program in collaboration with local experts from the Calgary community.
