Changes to Grade 6 for September 2026

If you live in Sage Hill, you should have received a letter from the CBE planning department last week that described changes coming for our grade 6’s next year.

Starting with the 2026-27 school year, students in Grades 6 to 9 living in Sage Hill or Kincora will be designated to Simon Fraser School. With our students from Hawkwood already shifting to Arbor Lake School for their grade 6 year, this recent decision will make Hawkwood School a K-5. Planning decisions are based on current and projected city data and the changing needs of multiple communities and multiple schools as the city grows and the CBE develops ways of meeting the needs of our school communities.

Details relative to timing, transportation, siblings and other schools being  impacted can be found on our Hawkwood School Website. Please connect with Mr. MacDonald if you have any questions.

Learning in Kindergarten

What does learning look like in kindergarten? How do you do Math when you are just learning numbers? How do you write when you are just learning letters?

Most things in kindergarten look and feel a bit different compared to our other classrooms. The provincial Kindergarten curriculum is designed around the developmental stages of students that age.

What does Math look like in Kindergarten?

Math 1 Math 2

Kindergarten students build foundational math skills by being able to identify a quality in various groups or arrangements, and counting forward and backward.

What does writing look like in Kindergarten?

LA 3 LA 2 LA 1

Kindergarten students build foundational literacy skills by learning how to recognize most upper- and lower-case letters by name. This includes early writing skills by learning how to express ideas in a variety of creative ways.

What other types of learning happens in Kindergarten?

Much of what happens in kindergarten includes learning how to share resources, space and collaborate. This includes demonstrating a willingness to cooperate with others, which is an important skill that will impact their learning in the years to come.

Calgary Food Bank

The demand for the Calgary Food Bank, and most food banks across Canada, has never been higher than this current year. With this in mind, Ms. Pearson, Ms. Metge and our Spirit Club will be coordinating this year’s Hawkwood School Food Drive.. We will have boxes set up to accept donations in the school entrance starting Monday, Dec. 7th

Lost and Found

If you did not get a chance to check out our lost and found during our recent Student Led Conferences, you still have time. Our current stash will remain on display near the front entrance for a couple more days. Do not wait too long as it will be bagged up and donated on Wednesday.
